The ways which I have shared in this guide are simple and they are DIY so you don’t need to worry about the expensive soundproofing material hold tight with me through the guide.
What is low-frequency noise?
Low-frequency noise is about 100HZ-150Hz and it’s hard to measure. This type of noise is produced by electric guitar, fans, generators, heavy traffic, and it’s hard to hear but you can feel the noise produced.
Most of the time the noise will be from the neighbors who are using the generator and various appliances in the house. This type of noise will be very disturbing and it will lead to many health issues like uneasiness, sleep disorders, anxiety, and depression.
The sound waves traveling from the neighbors are high-frequency sound waves that will almost penetrate from the surface unless it’s too thick.
Blocking out low-frequency noise is important because after a time period it will lead to serious health issues. All you need to do is stick with me through this guide.
What are the Sources of low-frequency noise?
Before jumping into soundproofing your house you need to check the sources from where the noise is transmitting and seal the sources with the soundproof materials.
It’s difficult to discover that areas where the noise is getting into the house but you need to pay attention to windows, doors, roofs, and walls of your home where the noise enters into the house.
However low-frequency sound waves are long and travel from long distances that are the reason you get the noise from your neighbors. I have listed some of the ways with which you can block out low-frequency noise.
How to block out low frequency noise
So hope you have figured out the sources of low-frequency noise and are ready to start soundproofing your house. BUT WAIT!! If you didn’t find the source it’s ok this guide will help you to soundproof the house by blocking out low-frequency noise.
1. Install Soundproof Curtains
Soundproof curtains are the best choice to block out low-frequency noise. If you have windows or doors then the low-frequency sound waves travel through the gaps present on the windows and doors frames.
You can’t seal all the gaps of the windows and doors the best thing you can do is install soundproof curtains which will absorb the sound waves coming through doors and windows.
They are a cheap and cost-effective solution to soundproof and it gives unique look to your house. Pay attention while covering the windows so that sound waves don’t have a way to enter your house.
There are many soundproof curtains available in the market for windows and doors you need to pay attention to the dimensions of the windows and doors and they should be soundproof in nature.
2. Install Drywall
Drywall will block out the low-frequency noise and the thicker the wall layer the more sound waves it absorbs that’s why installing drywall is a great idea and a better thing to install.
One drawback of drywall is you can install it on timber wood walls not on the concrete wall it’s not effective on concrete walls. As mentioned that the thicker the wall is the more noise it will saturate.
Make your drywall layer thicker for more sound waves absorption and effective results. You can also double your drywall for more good results.
Before adding the double layer of drywall you need to check whether your wall is capable of carrying that much weight. If your walls built quality is good then you can go with the installation of double drywall.
In some cases installing single drywall will be effective and it will block out low-frequency noise.
3. Use Fiberglass Insulation
If you are concerned about soundproofing your house and blocking out low-frequency noise then fiberglass insulation is the best choice.
You need to reconstruct your walls with fiberglass insulation that contains thousands of particles of glass layered to protect from the sound waves and help in living comfortably.
Fiberglass insulation works amazingly for blocking out low-frequency noise besides that it will help in maintaining the temperature in your house whether it’s summer or winter it maintains temperature level.
You can install fiberglass on exterior walls and interior walls as well for the better absorption of the sound waves transmitted from the external environment.
Fiberglass is an effective way and it will not require a huge investment you can install it on less budget and soundproof your house.
4. Soundproof Blankets
Soundproof blankets are one of the convenient ways to soundproof the room instantly. If you don’t want to invest in soundproofing the entire house then a soundproof blanket is the best choice.
It requires a huge investment to soundproof the complete house. So you can install soundproof blankets on the doors of the room.
Soundproofing the small area of your house like a room with a soundproof blanket will absorb the noise in a very little investment.
If you have a bigger house then it will be difficult to soundproof the entire house because if you leave even any gap unsealed sound waves transfer into the house.
So it’s a better choice to soundproof the room with blankets it will reduce noise and block out the low-frequency noise traveling to your room.
5. Soundproof Rug Pads
Placing the rug pads beneath the carpet will absorb the sound waves and also help in adding a unique look to the house.
Thicker rug pads block out noise more effectively and they will not disturb your neighbor whether children are playing or the dog it will block out the noise of footsteps.
They are cost-effective and more satisfactory when it comes to soundproofing the floor. You need to place the pads beneath the rug.
However, the rubber base is known for damaging the floor but it has its own advantages. If you have a wooden floor then go with the felt base material.
Always pay attention while purchasing because you need a non-slippery rug pad that will not slide and move from the place while the normal use.
While cutting the pads just place them on the carpet and cut an inch smaller for a perfect fit.
6. Acoustic Panels
If you love playing drums and guitar and don’t want to disturb the neighbors or the family then you can install acoustic panels which are also known as soundproof panels.
they will absorb noise and sound waves you need to install this on walls and it will work as a soundproofing agent that will block out low-frequency noise.
Acoustic panels are best to absorb the noise and they will block inside noise and the outside noise from entering your room.
Most of the studios use acoustic panels for a better balance between the noise and to reduce the outside noise entering the studio.
The installation process is easy and it’s not expensive it comes in different sizes and shapes that give astonishing look to your room and absorb noise.
If the sound is recorded without acoustic panels there will be an echo of the airflow to reduce that acoustic panels are used in studious and rooms.
Acoustic panels will be the first thing that populates in your mind when we talk about the soundproof room as it seals all the gaps on the walls and sound waves don’t transmit in the room.
7. Soundproof Paint
Whenever we talk about soundproofing than soundproof paint is the thing we give a thought to and try to first implement it.
Soundproof paint is also the best choice to block out low-frequency noise. You might question that does it really work? believe it or not, soundproof paint works for blocking out noise.
Similar to regular paint soundproof paint is water-based but the one component which we call latex is mixed in soundproof paint that makes your walls soundproof.
Soundproof paint doesn’t have many colors you only get a few colors that are light in nature but it’s effective to block sound waves.
If you’re using only soundproof paint without any soundproof material then it will not work. soundproof paint shouldn’t be the only thing to block noise.
As mentioned that if you’re using only soundproof paint then it’s not effective.
8. Use Resilient Channel
Are you experience the vibration from the ceiling? then it’s time to decouple your wall. Usually, low-frequency noise comes from solid surfaces.
In order to block that you need to install a resilient channel that will create a gap between the ceiling and the drywall that absorbs all the noise.
Basically, a resilient channel will help in penetrating the noise which transmits through the airflow and breaks it before reaching the drywall.
However, you need to remove the drywall to install a resilient channel but it’s worth installing. Once you install it will work well in blocking out low-frequency noise.
Without removing the drywall you can’t install the resilient channel. So pay attention while removing it and placing the resilient channel.
9. Use Green Glue To Seal Gaps
Use green glue to seal the gaps and cracks as it will reduce the noise coming from the cracks and gaps left unsealed.
Green glue acts as a soundproof agent. It is sandwiched between the rigid layers of the drywall to block out the noise transmitted from the ceiling.
After adding it between the layers of material it creates a damping system that contains a viscoelastic compound that behaves like a damping compound and blocks noise.
It effectively absorbs the sound vibrations and reduces up to 90% noise. It’s the ideal choice if you constructing a new ceiling or renovating the old one.
The compound unique properties act as a damping sound and dissipate the sound vibrations which are traveling from the ceiling.
Green glue is environmentally friendly and odorless it will not affect health and block out low-frequency noise.
